EUROPOL / False noodles, colored tuna: 3,600 tons of food withdrawn, 749 people arrested
In the framework of Europol's investigation, 3,600 tons of defective food was seized. Interpol also dealt with the investigation, and broken meat, chemically colored tuna, fake milk powder, poisonous yogurt or noodles with borax and formalin are some of the products served on plates around the world, according to Europol.
So far, from December 2017 to March this year, in over 67 countries, more than 3,620 tons and 9.7 million liters of falsified or non-standard food and beverages have been seized, resulting in more than 41,000 checks conducted at stores, at airports in seaports, or in factories. The value of these goods is estimated at 55 million euros.
"The results of the action show what can be done to protect customers around the world from the joint forces," said Jari Liku, head of the European Center for Tough and Organized Crime at Europol. After a four-month investigation, 749 people were arrested, and Europol continued its actions.
Belgium closed its main meat processing plant, and supermarkets retreated meat products after scrap with rotten meat. Controls in the meat destined for human consumption found parts of meat waste and parts of the carcasses used for animal nutrition, the statement said.
Four people were arrested in Spain, and a factory that packed fake milk for babies for China was closed. It took eight tons of that milk that does not have any nutritional value necessary for the baby's life.
The fish have been specially explored in 11 countries and this is the first time that it was a target product. In this case, the fish is chemically treated with paint to replace the preservation as fresh.
And Interpol dealt with this, and he discovered 50 criminal networks dealing with food fraud.
