FBiH Government has adopted a program of regional exploration of oil, condensate and natural gas in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the period from 2014 to 2023 as a document of development of promising research areas of oil and gas into the territory of the FBiH, transferred BiH. Federal Ministry of Energy, Mining and Industry and the Federal Bureau of Geology in charge of that, within 30 days, prepare an Action Plan for the implementation of research programs for the territory of the Dinarides. Are bound and that, pursuant to the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas in the Federation, perform preparatory work in order to launch and implementation of the program of oil and gas in the northern Bosnia.


The Government has tasked the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Finance, Labour and Social Policy, Physical Planning and Federal Administration of Civil Protection, within 30 days, make all preparations within its competence regarding exploration and exploitation of oil and gas, as well as to analyze policies adopted and comparative analysis of the policies of good practice in research this area.

As is known, the Strategic plan and program development of the energy sector of the FBiH, adopted in 2009, and the importance and impact of oil and natural gas in the overall economic and social development in BiH. In order to further develop the energy sector, as well as recommendations for further exploration for oil and gas on the basis of the favorable results of previously conducted studies. In this context, the program of regional exploration of oil, condensate and natural gas in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the period from 2014 to 2023 represents a basic strategic program of the Government for the definition of blocks for exploration and for the award of concessions.

The main goal of the research is definitely clear up doubts about the existence of economically significant deposits of oil and gas, and making a valuable contribution to the knowledge of the geological composition and structure of the crust on the exploration areas.

Based on survey results, it is assumed that there are promising areas for oil and gas exploration in northern Bosnia (Orašje, Odžak and Tuzla pool), central Bosnia (Sarajevo-Zenica basin) and the southwestern and southern Bosnia and Herzegovina (Velika Kladusa-Glamoč- Dreinica-Stolac-Neum). These exploratory areas are separated so that they fit into two separate projects upstream: Dinarides Project (Velika Kladusa-Glamoč-Dreinica-Stolac-Neum and Sarajevo-Zenica basin) and Project northern Bosnia.
