'Missile shield is not directed against Russia or the other, but is intended to defend against missile threats, "says NATO.
A recent statement by Russian Ambassador in Copenhagen Mikhail Vanja that Danish warships to be a legitimate target Russian nuclear missiles if Denmark access the program "missile shield" caused a strong condemnation of NATO.

"Denmark is a staunch ally of NATO, and NATO will all your allies defend against any threat. We have made it clear that the missile shield is not directed against Russia or other countries, but is intended to defend against missile threats," said a spokeswoman Alliance Oana Lungescu.

She added that "the tone and content of Vanja's comments eroded confidence in Russia" and that the "provocative, somewhat confusing statement was made at a bad time."

"The decision on the missile shield was made a long time ago, so we are surprised by the choice of the moment, the tone and content of reviews made by the Russian Ambassador to Denmark. Such statements do not contribute to predictability, peace and stability," said Lungescu, reports Copenhagen Post.

Denmark in August last year announced that it will missile shield NATO contribute radar facilities on some of its warships.

Missiles may in Greenland

According to Jyllands-Posten, NATO has no plans to set up missile on the ground of Denmark, but may in the long run to install in Greenland - a territory that belongs to the country.

Officially the NATO missile shield is intended defense against potential missile threat from Iran, but in Moscow emphasize that it undermines the Russian system of nuclear deterrence as the West got the ability to bring down Russian missiles.

At Vanja's claims to Denmark thus the potential to become threats to Russia, noting that Moscow has missiles that could penetrate missile shield NATO, said the Danish foreign minister Martin Lidegaard, which such statements are unacceptable.

"Russia knows well that the missile defense system NATO is not directed against it," said Lidegaard for Jilands-Posten, and rated as Vanya "crossed the line".

In an atmosphere of heightened tension between Moscow and the West over Ukraine, NATO has in recent months registered increased activity of the Russian navy and air forces in the Nordic region.
