DUDAKOVIĆ "Storm" was legitimate, it destroyed two para-state
General Atif Dudaković, commander of the Fifth Corps of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in an exclusive interview for "Dnevni Avaz" on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Croatian military operation "Storm" shows the importance of this action to unblock the then Bihac District and the liberation of the occupied parts of today's Una-Sana Canton .
The legendary commander and symbol of the struggle and the heroic resistance against the aggressor states that the freedom we have paid the highest price, and recalls that on August 5, 1995, received the news of the death of the famous knight commander of the 505th Buzim Brigade Izet Nanic.

In Croatia, yesterday celebrated the 20th anniversary of the "Storm" operation of the Croatian Army. And two decades after this action following numerous controversies. What is your opinion on the "Storm"?
- Action "Storm" was a legitimate military operation which were then occupied Croatian territory placed in the framework of the constitutional order. This operation represents a great victory of the Croatian army in the fight for your country.
Except for Croatia, "Storm" had a great importance in unblocking the then Bihac District, which was occupied more than 300,000 people ...
- The great importance of the "Storm" for the entire Bosanska Krajina and the Krajina who until that August 1995 was more than 1,200 days of the blockade and the aggressor environment and exposed to constant attacks of the Bosnian Serbs, then the Serbs from the so-called. Serbian Autonomous Region (SAO) Krajina, as well as the forces of Fikret Abdic. And the fact is that the action "Storm" experienced not only unblock, but also freedom.
Meeting at the bridge
Tomorrow will be exactly the 20th anniversary of your historic meeting with Croatian General Marijan Marekovic on the Korana Bridge in Tržačka Rastelli. What kind of feelings awakens the day?
- It is a great day not only for me but for comrades, for all of Krajina. This year we evoke memories of those days of struggle and survival and to all those who contributed to the liberation of this part of our country, and, unfortunately, have not been with us. Cazin Municipality in Tržačka Rastelli series of events to which I am invited and this year marks the significant dates. Every year, so expect this, come and Croatian delegations.
However, for two decades, "Storm" following various accusations, mainly with Serbian and Serbian side, it was a criminal action. How do you comment on that?
- We must not ignore the very important facts. And that is that the "Storm" destroyed two para-state - the so-called. SAO Krajina and the so-called. Autonomous Province of Western Bosnia. The two self-proclaimed leader of the para-state Martic and Fikret Abdic were sentenced for war crimes in Croatia and Bosnia. And now is the fact that after the "Storm" was followed by a wave of refugee Serbs from Croatian and KLADUŠAN from the western part of Bosnia. However, I think it was an abuse and manipulation of the people and the political situation and the war adventure, just those who are going to war.
Unfortunately, the anniversary of the liberation of today's Una-Sana Canton and mark the anniversary of the death of our many heroes, including the commander of the 505th Buzim Brigade Izet Nanic.
- The freedom we paid their most valuable asset we have and we could weave in history. The lives of our heroes. The 5th of August in the northern part of the battlefield was killed in a major commander of the 505th Buzim Brigade knight Izet Nanić. On the same day in the southern part of the battlefield, killing 13 members of the 502 Mountain Brigade. That day, killing a total of 20 of our fighters.
No oblivion
Do you remember where you caught the news of the death of the late Nanića?
- It can never be forgotten. I was in the ranks 502nd Brigade just in Celopek, a hill in Licko Petrovo Selo, which was just released and it went to Grabovac. The news of the death of Nanićevoj got radioed. Regardless of what we have hitherto lived and experienced in the war, the kind of news you never can be prepared. This was followed by shock and disbelief, and it took me some time to narrow part of the command 502. brigade be made known to the news. I know I ordered the Chief of Staff to take command and to take other necessary action. Any loss of any life is irreplaceable and equally difficult, but it seems that we all somehow those deaths on the threshold of freedom more difficult to burn. I remember that the father of the late Nanića came from Split. Instead of being seen with his son, came to him for the funeral.
All celebrate their victory
- A lot of stories these days about whether to celebrate or not to be a victory. And we are all celebrating their victory. As Croats glory, and Serbs are celebrating the release of Belgrade. I wonder what some wrong that these days mark the various events, whether it is called a parade or gathering of people - says general Dudaković
We had the conditions to fully liberate BiH
At the beginning of the "Storm" started the campaign of the Fifth Corps with you at the forefront of the liberation of other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. What about you and Silas stopped in heaven liberation campaign?
- Strategic changes. Unlocking the then Bihac District created the conditions for total relief Bosnia and normally we're in that direction and we were engaged.
