At least 44 people were killed and dozens were wounded in the air strike which is thought to have been carried out by Russian forces in a well-attended market in the Syrian province of Idlib, according to activists.

Hospital sources said the injured more than 70 people.

The attack was carried out early in the morning in the town of Ariha, 15 kilometers south of the city of Idlib. Local news channel Ariha Youm reported that they used cluster bombs in the attack of the Russian fighter.

Rami Abdulrahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights based in London, said that according to information provided to at least 60 people were killed and wounded in the attack.

Proopozicijski Orient TV channel has reported that according to initial reports 40 people were killed.

Russian Defense Ministry officials were not available for comment.

The rebels control Idlib

Russian air force carried out from September 30 airstrikes in Syria.

Ariha is situated in the province of IDLB, which is controlled by rebel groups, including the Al-Nusra Front, linked to Al-Qaeda.

The Province is not a stronghold of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which controls large parts of eastern Syria.

Syrian troops withdrew from Ariha in May, after the alliance of rebel groups - including Al-Nusra Front - progress in Idlib in the offensive which the whole provinces fell into the hands of insurgents.
