The death toll in the earthquake in Italy rose to 267
The number of people killed in an earthquake in central Italy has risen to 267, said Friday the Italian Civil Protection, adding that 387 people were hospitalized.
An earthquake measuring 6.2 degrees on the Richter scale hit the mountainous area izmneđu region of Umbria, Lazio and Marche at 03.36 hours on Wednesday morning, destroying buildings and leaving many people trapped under the rubble in three places about 150 kilometers northeast of Rome.
Protezione Civile (Civil Protection) said that 207 people died in Amatriceu, 49 and Arquata del Tronto and 11 in Accumoliju. The agency had previously estimated that at least 250 people lost their lives as a result of the earthquake.Rescuers are still working in Amatriceu, while the search for survivors interrupted in two more cities, reports dpa.
A spokesman for the fire service, Luca Cari told public radio RAI that the authorities have not given up the search for people under the rubble.
- We're still at the stage of hopes - he said.
Since the first earthquake on Wednesday registered more than 900 aftershocks, said the Protezione Civile. Particularly strong tremors, magnituide 4.8 degrees, caused the new damage in Amatriceu on Friday, the state news agency Ansa.
