Bosnia and Herzegovina is in the group of countries with the highest number of emigrants per capita.

According to the latest data from the American Institute Pew, the world is in 2015 there were about 244 million migrants who live and work outside the country, while in 2010 their number was 222 miliona.Istraživanje experts of the institute showed that nine countries have lost fifths or even more of their own population in recent decades.According to the survey, a third of births in the country today lives abroad, while 28 percent of Albanians and Jamaicans left the country and continued to live in other countries around the world.

Also, a quarter of the population of Armenia in 2015 has lived abroad, while a fifth of births in Kazakhstan, Syria, Trinidad and Tobago, Macedonia and Portugal live outside their home country.Among the most common reasons for emigration of people are armed conflicts and physical threats, and in recent years, rising unemployment, ie. a large number of people go to other countries in search of better economic opportunities.The report of the American Institute warns that emigration can have very serious consequences for the country's demographics, particularly when young people leave the country and go to live in another country.

Emigration, can also cause the problem of aging and lack of highly-skilled labor needed for the national economy.
