India has become the most populous country in the world, established by the American demographer causing shock among experts worldwide.

Yi Fuxian, an academic from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who fought against the population policy of China, which is officially considered to have the highest population in the world, announced the findings at a conference held in Beijing, agencies report.

He said he is convinced that Chinese statisticians overestimated population last 26 years to around 90 million. Thus, the population at the end of this year in China will be 1.29 billion. He told the Guardian confirmed his claims saying that the official statisnike according to which in China live 1320000000 - incorrect.

- I think it's population in China 1.29 billion, while in India approximately 1.32 billion - said Fuxian.
