EU: Free internet in public places

The European Union (EU) has decided that over the next two years public places such as municipalities, hospitals and parks will be covered by a free Wi-Fi internet connection. It adds that 120 million euros will be earmarked for this project, reports Anadoli.

The European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the European Commission have concluded an agreement on the WIFI4EU project, which will ensure free internet access in public institutions of the European Union member states. It is planned that the project will be implemented over the next two years.

Overcome the outdated rules

It was emphasized that the implementation of this project will be primarily in regions where weak internet infrastructure is present. It is also envisaged that project implementation will begin by the end of 2017, and that 8,000 new WiFi access points will be formed. When the whole system is ready, local authorities will be able to apply for this project. Authorities will then get vouchers to buy equipment, but local or state authorities will need to cover the costs of the connection itself. The WiFi4EU initiative is part of the EU's efforts to overcome obsolete telecoms rules that hinder the growing demand for connectivity and data exchange.
