Apocalyptic scenes from Puerto Rico: No contact with the villages, desperate people without water and electricity
Officials in Puerto Rico described conditions as an apocalypse after the hurricane Maria passed. Damage is unmistakable, and electricity and telephone networks are missing on most of the island.
At least 10 people were killed in a storm that has risen the island for several decades.
"The greenery of the island has disappeared. Plants are destroyed, families are left without homes, debris is everywhere, "said Jenniffer Gonzalez, a resident trustee.
Workers are prevented from coming to some places because heavy rain has triggered landslides. The mountains could break down every moment. Most of the population has been evacuated, but officials have no contact with nine of the 78 municipalities.
The number of deaths is expected to increase as rescuers have not yet reached the northern coast, including the village of Fatima where hospitals and nursing homes are located.
Throughout the Caribbean, Hurricane Maria killed 31 people. Electrodistributions merged and sent drones to record the damage. The army continues to save the captured people and help those in the shelter.
In Puerto Rico's main port 11 ships came with 1.6 million gallons of water, 23,000 beds, dozens of generators and food. More than a dozen ships are expected, as a major international aid action has been launched.
The residents are without water, fuel, and they remain without food.
"The mystery began to spread. The hospitals are overflowing. We need help right away, "Mayor Jose Sanchez Gonzalez said crying.
More than 15,000 people were sheltered, and 2,000 were rescued from the city of Toa Baja.
