The situations in which students are "covered" by the head, luckily, I have the opportunity often to look at your work and family environment, but you are aiming from the media, from the comments, from "expert" texts. I am sad to say that about us lurks a lot of self-proclaimed "experts", "educators", "educators" who their opinion based on unverified information or reckless opinion.

And that is exactly the foundation that children need to instill, around which should build their awareness, their self-confidence, their view of life. Against superficial interpretations unverified information and questionable impact we can fight only quiet and clear example, awakening the children and pupils that it is wise to think. Modern teaching should strive three basic outcomes. It does not say it explicitly anywhere and Counted facts, but it all comes down to this. The result is, for those bothered by the explanation, a goal that the teacher asks his students. One information, knowledge, or skills that, at the end of the teaching process, they need to know. General outcomes: learning to learn, critical to think and express themselves creatively. Not one of them Romance of and not an end in itself, but is applicable to each subject, at all learning, at all material on all sorts of things that our students "must" know.

Learning how to learn is a very complex process and our pupils bad surf on this material. Most poor know how to learn, on the one hand, and on the other they are required to be the best, most successful, most powerful because, if they are not, their lives hanging in the balance.

And these people who were randomly part of life your and our children, should children learn how to learn. One day will have to solve a problem, make a decision, come to terms with a spouse or made explicit stance - whether we lit lamp over their heads and cheer for them the words they need to do? Of course not. And when it also set, not a mature person would say - yes, I will my child, teenager, adult always tidy up the room, write tasks and solve quests. But - so behave!

And that leads to the first outcomes: learning to learn. The other day I ran up the stairs to the little first graders scampering untied sneakers. I stood beside him and told him that I think his shoelace untied. He stopped, looked up, said he knew, but he did not know commit. I asked him if I can help him. He said: Can you commit shoe! I told him I can, if you think you do not need to be untied. He said: Well, yes, because I usually fall. Okay, I said, but I think I can do it alone. Then a little scratch behind the ear and concluded: Oh, can it, I do not know exactly great , but at least I will not stumble. He bent down and tied her shoe. It was not difficult!

This dash standing here because one of the first lessons of life chapter: Learning to learn. Learn from trial and error, learning is easy, if you do it imperative that you have to know immediately and that, but everything must be done seamlessly and perfectly, and learns constantly, everywhere and always. And - learning from the beginning. Start to be found, and that good teachers know. The boy did not know to tie shoe, I'd probably invited his peers to show him. Or I showed him, untied and asked him to try himself. However, it was important to determine where the start of which the child should be taught.

My petas like to tell me: Professor, I surrender! Students are sponges, all eventually learn, some sooner, some later, but learn. Learning is a process. A process that requires a teacher who listens, who is present, which can identify where the beginning of whom should start. What is the purpose dictionary?

One sixth grade the other day in class complained that he can not understand certain words in a book report which reads and does not know what to do. We are of course hundreds of times so far talked about the role of dictionaries, method of seeking explanations of unknown words, moreover - in the classroom several dictionaries and Sixers have their own little ritual. When you hear the word you do not understand, one gets up, takes a dictionary, word finds, raise your hand and then fit all - we could all read aloud meaning. No one will ever convince you that it is better that I told them was written and what a certain word means.

Well, despite all the above, one student is still not coping with their perusal. He loudly and clearly shares with us, his start is going on right now. Simply, so far his information about finding the meanings of words are not needed, but took place and that moment - now. And he clearly seeks direction. I did not tell him what to do, I asked who had a similar problem and how it is resolved. Well explained to him that the book has a dictionary of unknown words in the end and that he is the best right now but look and write, because it's so easily. No one is not surprised, appalled, asked him if he was a normal, etc. This is called collaborative learning and a very good example for learning to learn.

Year-old Juliet and Romeo in tights

with eighth graders the other day I read a fragment of Romeo and Juliet. First I asked to write what they know about Romeo and Juliet and Shakespeare. When you have written and complained were, of course, because as they know nothing, we wrote down all their claims on the screen . Then we read one at a time and think out loud whether the statement is correct, incorrect or need more information. I gave them no answers, they conceived of themselves. In July, the very young age of 23 years, Romeo wears tights ... and everyone knows that there is a dialogue in which Juliet pronounced: Romeo on Romeo, why are you Romeo? I do not know why and where it knows, but agree that they know. Then we listened fragment but returned assertions, some we are immediately able to discuss, some others are for homework.

Finally, now that we talk about all the drama calling information in the style of "we said that when we were doing Shakespeare" ... everyone knows how many years they had, how they dressed, and why the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet popular today. One student said that he had learned not to be after partying (he decided to Juliet just returned home before going out on the balcony) go to take the air on the balcony, especially in the moonlight, because you can happen to a guy down below the balcony happens to you is a tragedy that did not ask for this! If you think this is a very silly argument, you are wrong, because - the student has learned all he needed, the outcome is achieved. I find it important to be able to link the facts, understand something through their own experience, to express themselves freely and definitely one day become the person who knows why some thoughts so that he thinks, and knows how to get someone solutions. There are no answers, and there are no collective solutions are applicable to everyone.

Sixteen steps back

All these examples are on the trail of learning how to learn. Students are not giving them for granted, but to them come alone, studying, looking, reflect, discuss, seek help ... and cope quite successfully. If something does not understand immediately, and this frustrates them, always tell them - slowly, you do not immediately know everything. Students are much calmer, more relaxed, work with a will because, among other things, competing with yourself.

And to the children learn how to learn, sometimes they need to accurately explain the learning process. We learn methods - error correcting different color, do not delete them, we want to be "the plane" see what we have sinned, we do summaries, Venn diagrams, grapes, mind map, draw symbols tasks access to hundreds of different ways, invent quizzes, questionnaires, playing charades and we all importance. Once on board write a sentence and underline predicates or write and solve mathematical problems or say that the experiment performed so because it is so - you've ruined the process. Students need to know how and have to learn by trial and error, sure that with you have a person to them in their process of directing.

In classrooms where the teacher is the fact, says that things are the way they are and that the two have nothing to say, quietly, you hear a fly in the air, the students sit quietly and watch in front of you and waiting for the bell. In classrooms where students learn, seek solutions and independent and collaborative come to conclusions, live it, work, relaxed and often at the end of an hour to hear: Do more rings?
