Citizens worried: #Croatia wants to dispose of nuclear waste at the #BiH border
According to the announcement of the construction of this facility, the inhabitants of the lower Una River will be the most vulnerable, and residents of the municipality Dvor na Uni, on the territory of Croatia, in which the Trade Gora is on which the construction of this facility is planned, is also being fought against the eventual construction.
Nevertheless, the State Regulatory Agency for Radioactive and Nuclear Security of BiH emphasize that they do not have information on the possibility of building this facility, but also that the Trade Plan in the Proposal of the National Program for the Implementation of the Strategy for Disposal of Radioactive Waste, Used Spent and Used Nuclear Fuel is listed as the only Possible location.
"Croatia has not submitted official responses to BiH's remarks concerning the construction of this facility. Therefore, our agency carries out a regular analysis of published responses on the official website of the National Institute of Radiological and Nuclear Safety of the Republic of Croatia in relation to this topic. We also perform all the activities within BiH, from the international treaties and conventions for which it is in charge and all relevant institutions are reporting all this, "they pointed out from the State Regulatory Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety.
Agreements signed, cooperation questionable
They also recall from the DRARNS BiH that BiH and Croatia signed and ratified a number of international treaties and conventions that regulate this area, but in spite of that no responses were received on BiH's remarks on this project. Therefore, at the proposal of DRARNS, a working group was established in the Council of Ministers of BiH to monitor the status and activities related to this project.
"Relevant tests should be carried out to adequately assess the possible risk of exposure to ionizing radiation due to the disposal of radioactive waste, used sources and spent nuclear fuel at the Trade Hill site. The population of the municipality of Dvor should receive timely information about the project, as well as the population of BiH, and the entire project should be implemented in accordance with international agreements, conventions and directives, "they add from DRARNS.
DZRNS of Croatia: No radioactive atom should exit the plant
However, although in BH. Told the public that a landfill of nuclear waste could be built at the location of Trgovska gora, from the State Institute for Radiological and Nuclear Safety of the Republic of Croatia point out that it is only a warehouse. This practically implies that nuclear waste will only stand there for some time, after which it will be relocated to a permanent landfill site.
"Since 2013, Croatia has been working to address the management of radioactive waste and one of the solutions that proved proving to be is the establishment of a temporary warehouse at Trgovska gora, which would last until the 2040s. The facility would have been constructed in such a way as to adapt the existing military facility, with the construction of new necessary facilities, "said Sasa Medakovic, director of the DZRNS Croatia.
He added that the decision on the final location of this warehouse has not been made yet, and that this institution did not receive any official requests for construction.
"We will not issue any permits before the safety of this facility is proven, and one of the prerequisites is BiH's inclusion in the whole process, which will transparently and undoubtedly prove that such a waste warehouse is safe and harmless to the environment. So, before construction, operators of such an object will have to prove to the public and to us as a regulator that no atom will leave the warehouse, let alone reach BiH, "concluded Medakovic.
Citizens on both sides of the border are concerned about the construction of this plant and it is certain that in the coming months there will be more and more public talks about this project.
