2,700 seasonal workers are missing in Croatia

In Croatia, about 2,700 seasonal workers are missing, but this problem did not arise at once and should be addressed by systematic improvement of their position, said at a press conference of the trade unions of Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia (SIKD) on Friday.

The president of Trade Union Committee for Tourism Marina Cvitić said that for such a situation, apart from employers who thought that unchecked could increase their profits, mostly due to low labor costs, all government and tourism ministries are responsible because they did not detect the problem in time and found a solution Legal regulations. In the union think how

- to solve the problem of lack of seasonal workers, most of which are support staff

- Firstly, the wages in tourism should be increased, which are 18 percent lower than the national average. They also believe that unfair competition should be prevented from a part of employers who pay workers a part of their salary as a minimum wage and the remainder "in black".
It is necessary to introduce norms and standards of work based on which, depending on the category of objects, it will be prescribed how many workers should be employed, how many rooms can be cleaned by one person, how many guests to serve .... Then, they say in the trade union, there would be no exploitation, and people in the age of 50 could also perform jobs in tourism.

As one of the conditions for solving the problem of workers' shortages, the trade unions listed appropriate working conditions and accommodation for seasonal workers. They maintain that the tax system needs changes in order to prevent discrimination of workers. They explained that a worker who is paid by the employer over the salary for housing and food after the institution has a higher fee, and then a pension. The union proposes to delimit the right to work for half a working time only for pensioners who have exercised the right to a full old age pension, and allow this to pensioners who went to an early retirement.

It is necessary to extend the tourist season and incentives to stimulate employers who hire workers for an indefinite period of time, and whose facilities work throughout the year. Marina Cvitić said that it is too late for this year and that solutions should be sought for the next tourist season. She added that this season would somehow be "crushed", but it should not hurt and be exploited workers, in which the State Inspectorate plays an important role.

SIKD President Bruno Bulic assessed that workers in tourism should not be imported and that there is money for their better wages, since the profit of tourism companies in Croatia is greater than the similar ones abroad. He believes that in tourism it is necessary to secure as many contracts as possible on an indefinite period, which would further motivate the education of missing staff.
